Adverbs help you give more detail in English. They often describe how, when, where, or how often an action happens. In this lesson, you will learn what adverbs are, the four basic types, and how to recognize them in simple sentences.

What Is an Adverb?

An adverb gives extra information. It often describes a verb, but it can also describe an adjective, another adverb, or even a whole sentence. In this lesson, we'll will focus on how adverbs describe verbs.

Examples

• She runs quickly. (quickly = adverb)
• He always wakes up early. (always, early = adverbs)

The Four Basic Types of Adverbs

Adverbs can tell you different kinds of information. These are the four types of adverbs that are convered in this lesson.

1. Adverbs of Manner (How?)

These describe how an action happens.

slowly	धीरे से
quickly	जल्दी से
quietly	चुपचाप
well	अच्छा

2. Adverbs of Time (When?)

These describe when an action happens.

today	आज
now	अब
later	बाद में

3. Adverbs of Place (Where?)

These describe where an action happens.

here	यहां
there	वहाँ
outside	बाहर

4. Adverbs of Frequency (How often?)

These describe how often an action happens.

always	हमेशा
sometimes	कभी कभी
never	कभी नहीं

Examples

We slowly walked up the hill.	हम धीरे-धीरे पहाड़ी पर चले गए।
I will call you later.	मैं बाद में फोन करूंगा।
They are waiting outside.	वे बाहर इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं.
They always go to the store on Monday.	वे हमेशा सोमवार को स्टोर पर जाते हैं।
We sometimes study at night.	हम कभी-कभी रात में पढ़ते हैं।
The dog runs quickly.	कुत्ता तेजी से दौड़ता है.
I am here now.	मैं अब यहाँ हूँ।
She visits her grandmother every weekend.	वह हर सप्ताहांत अपनी दादी से मिलने जाती है।
I'm never late.	मैंने कभी देरी नहीं की।
