Introduction to Adverbs

Adverbs help you give more detail in English. They often describe how, when, where, or how often an action happens. In this lesson, you will learn what adverbs are, the four basic types, and how to recognize them in simple sentences.

What Is an Adverb?

An adverb gives extra information. It often describes a verb, but it can also describe an adjective, another adverb, or even a whole sentence. In this lesson, we'll will focus on how adverbs describe verbs.

Examples

  • She runs quickly. (quickly = adverb)
  • He always wakes up early. (always, early = adverbs)

The Four Basic Types of Adverbs

Adverbs can tell you different kinds of information. These are the four types of adverbs that are convered in this lesson.

1. Adverbs of Manner (How?)

These describe how an action happens.

These describe when an action happens.

Examples

Listen Button We slowly walked up the hill. 私たちはゆっくりと丘を歩きました。
Listen Button I will call you later. 後で電話します。
Listen Button They are waiting outside. 彼らは外で待っています。
Listen Button They always go to the store on Monday. 彼らはいつも月曜日に店に行きます。
Listen Button We sometimes study at night. 私たちは時々夜に勉強します。
