1. Why clear paragraphs matter
Paragraphs help your reader understand your ideas easily. This lesson focuses on creating effective paragraphs for business and academic writing.
A strong paragraph has one main idea and supporting details. Clear paragraphs make your writing easier to follow and more professional.
2. What is a paragraph?
A paragraph is a group of sentences about one main idea.
- Topic sentence – the main idea
- Supporting sentences – examples, explanations, details
- Concluding sentence – a final thought
- Topic sentence: I enjoy cycling because it helps me relax.
- Supporting sentence: When I cycle, I can clear my mind and enjoy the fresh air.
- Concluding sentence: For these reasons, cycling is my favourite way to spend free time.
3. Useful language
Topic sentences

- A place I really enjoy is…
Supporting sentences

Concluding sentences

4. Model paragraph
Topic sentence: My favourite place to study is the library because it is quiet and comfortable.
Supporting sentences: The study rooms are peaceful, and I can focus without distractions. The chairs are comfortable, and there is plenty of space for my books and laptop. I also like that the library has good lighting and free Wi‑Fi.
Concluding sentence: For these reasons, the library is the best place for me to study.
5. Practice: Identify the parts
Label each sentence as T (topic), S (supporting), or C (concluding).
- I love cooking because it helps me relax after a long day.
- For these reasons, cooking is an important part of my life.
- I enjoy trying new recipes and experimenting with different flavours.
- It also gives me a chance to be creative.
6. Practice: Improve the paragraph
Rewrite the paragraph with a clear structure.
I like my neighbourhood. There are many shops. The people are friendly. There is a park. I walk my dog there.
7. Writing task
Write a paragraph (5–7 sentences) on one of the following topics:
- A hobby you enjoy
- A place that is special to you
- A person who has influenced you
- A goal you want to achieve
Your paragraph must include:
- one clear topic sentence
- at least three supporting sentences
- one concluding sentence
