Chapter 5

Listen to the Story

It is Wednesday morning. Maya is standing in the kitchen, and Eric is cleaning the windows. Outside, a light rain is falling on the lake.

Maya looks at the silver key in her hand. “What are you doing, Maya?” Eric asks.

“I am thinking about the man in the grey coat,” she says. She puts the silver key on the counter. Then she makes some coffee.

Suddenly, the front door opens. The man in the grey coat is walking into the café. His clothes are wet from the rain. He is carrying a small, old book.

Maya is not moving. Her heart is beating fast. The man stops. He is looking at the silver key on the counter. He is not smiling, but he is not angry. He is waiting for something.

“Are you looking for this?” Maya asks. She points to the key.

The man is not speaking. He is opening his old book. He is showing Maya a picture of the lake from many years ago. In the picture, a young man is hiding a box under a big oak tree.
