Chapter 12

Listen to the Story

Maya and Eric left the café in the late afternoon, carrying the old map. The sky was clear after yesterday’s storm, and the air smelled fresher than usual. The map showed a large X deep inside Willow Park, and today they wanted to see what was there.

The entrance to the forest was quieter than the park. The trees here were taller than the ones near the lake, and the shadows between them were darker. Eric stopped and looked around.

They entered the forest and walked along a trail. The deeper they walked, the stranger the forest felt. The air grew colder, and the ground became harder under their feet. Maya held the old map tightly in her hand. The trail started to go in the wrong direction, so they carefully looked for another path. After about 10 minutes, Eric saw a narrow path behind a large boulder. The path was almost invisible from the main path.

“This must be it,” Maya said.

They walked carefully along the hidden trail. The forest became darker, and the air felt cooler. The sound of birds disappeared. Maya felt a little nervous, but she kept walking.

Finally, they reached a clearing. In the center stood a massive oak tree—bigger than any tree they had ever seen in the park. Its branches stretched wide, and its roots twisted across the ground like thick ropes.

“This is the place,” Eric said.

Maya walked around the tree slowly. She found a place where the ground looked different, as if someone had dug there a long time ago. She knelt down and touched the dirt. "I think there's something buried here."

The began to dig with small shovels. After a few minutes, Eric’s shovel hit something hard.

“I found something!” he said.

They cleared the dirt

Slowly, a small metal box appeared. It was old, rusted, and covered in mud. Maya lifted it carefully.

“This is it,” she whispered. “The box from the photo.” She took a deep breath and reached into her pocket. She pulled out the silver key.

“Do you think it will work?” Eric asked.

“There’s only one way to know.”

She pushed the key into the lock. It fit perfectly. With a soft click, the box opened.

Inside, the lining was torn and faded, but something was carved into the metal under the lid—a symbol shaped like a curved branch. It was the same symbol from the map and the old book the man carried.
