Chapter 9

Listen to the Story

The storm from yesterday is over, and the café is very clean. Maya is busy cleaning the storage room behind the kitchen. She wants to find more napkins, but she finds something different instead. In a small, wooden drawer, there is a piece of paper.

Maya pulls the paper out. It is not a napkin; it is an old map of Willow Park. The paper is yellow and thin because it is very old. Maya looked at the map carefully. She started to see many interesting details. On the map, someone marked the lake and a place in the forest with red ink.

"Eric, come here!" Maya called. Eric opened the door and walked into the room. He looked at the map for a long time.

"This map is very strange," Eric whispered. "Look at the forest. There is a small 'X' in the middle of the forest."

Maya remembered the shiny silver key she found on the windowsill. She wondered if the key opened something located at the 'X' on the map. She decided to keep the map in her pocket. The mystery of the man in the grey coat was now even bigger.

Grammar Focus: Past Simple Regular Verbs

In this chapter, we use Past Simple to talk about finished actions in the past. For regular verbs, we usually add -ed or -d to the end of the verb.

Rule: Verb + -ed

Spelling Note: If the verb ends in 'e', just add 'd' (e.g., dance -> danced). If it ends in 'y' after a consonant, change 'y' to 'i' and add 'ed' (e.g., cry -> cried).

Examples
