Chapter 16

Listen to the Story

The fog settled over Willow Park like a thick blanket, soft but unsettling. Maya had only meant to take a short walk to clear her mind, but the moment she stepped onto the forest path, the world behind her seemed to fade. The sounds of the lake, the distant chatter from the rival café, even the hum of cars—all of it disappeared into the mist.

She walked deeper, following a trail she thought she recognized. But the fog grew heavier, curling around the trees and swallowing the path. Soon, everything looked the same: tall trunks, pale mist, and shadows that shifted when she wasn’t looking.

Maya stopped. Was this the right direction?

She turned around, expecting to see the path behind her. Instead, she saw only fog.

Her heartbeat quickened. “Stay calm,” she whispered. “Just keep moving.”

But every step made her feel more lost. The forest seemed to twist around her, guiding her in circles. Branches creaked overhead. Leaves rustled even though the air was still. At one point, she thought she heard footsteps behind her, but when she turned, there was nothing.

She tried calling out. “Hello? Is anyone there?”

Her voice sounded small, swallowed by the trees.

Just when panic began to rise in her chest, she saw a shape through the fog—a dark outline, low and square. She moved toward it, pushing through the mist until the shape became clearer.

A cabin.

Old. Abandoned. Hidden deep in the woods.

Maya approached slowly. The wooden walls were covered in moss, and the roof sagged under years of rain. One window was cracked, another boarded up. The door hung slightly open, as if someone had left in a hurry.

She pushed it gently. It creaked loudly, echoing through the silent forest.

Inside, the air was cold and stale. Dust floated in the dim light. The cabin was small—just one room—but every corner told a story. A rusted stove sat against the wall. A wooden chair lay on its side. A shelf held a few old books, their pages yellow and curled. A blanket was folded neatly on a narrow bed, though it was faded and thin.

Maya stepped farther inside, her shoes creaking on the uneven floorboards. She noticed a metal cup on the table, a cracked lantern, and a coat hook shaped like it once held something heavy. Everything looked frozen in time.

Everything looked untouched, as if someone had left in a hurry years ago.
