Chapter 15

Listen to the Story

Two weeks earlier, Maya and Eric had noticed construction starting on the empty building across the lake. At first, it didn’t worry them. The workers were quiet, the trucks came and went, and no signs were posted. The building looked like it could become anything—a shop, an office, maybe even a small gallery. They had joked about it, wondering what kind of neighbor they might get.

But today, everything changed.

When Maya arrived at the café early that morning, she saw bright colors flashing across the lake. She stepped closer to the window and froze.

A huge banner hung across the newly finished building:

GRAND OPENING – THE GOLDEN BEAN CAFÉ.

Her heart dropped.

Eric rushed in moments later, still pulling off his jacket. “You saw it too?”

Maya nodded slowly. “So that’s what the construction was for.”

Anna arrived with a box of pastries. “I guess you’ve seen the new Café. I found out that it’s owned by Mr. Halden.”

Across the lake, the new building gleamed with polished metal and tall glass windows. Music played from speakers outside. Staff in matching uniforms handed out free drinks to a growing crowd.

Eric groaned. “We should have known. Halden must have been planning this from the start.”

Maya crossed her arms. “He didn’t just want to buy our café. He wanted to replace us.”

Anna frowned. “We have to be careful. If he’s connected to the keeper’s disappearance, this café might be part of something bigger.”

Eric nodded. “And we have to act fast. If we don’t, we’ll lose customers.”

Maya took a deep breath. “We must not panic. People come here because they feel at home. We can’t compete with his money, but we can compete with our atmosphere.”

Anna brightened. “You should add new drinks. Maybe seasonal specials.”

Eric added, “And we should host events—music nights, book clubs, something unique.”

Maya looked around their café with it’s cozy wooden tables, the warm lights, the familiar smell of cinnamon and coffee. “We have to work harder than ever. Halden wants the land, not just the business. This is a move in a much bigger game.”

“We can’t compete with his money,” Eric said quietly. “But we can compete with heart.”

Across the lake, the rival café buzzed with excitement. But inside Willow Park Café, determination settled like a steady flame.

The competition had officially begun.
