Chapter 6

Listen to the Story

The man in the grey coat stands at the counter. He is very quiet. Maya wants to know more about the old book and the silver key.

“Do you speak English?” Maya asks.

The man looks at her. He nods his head, but he doesn't say a word.

“Do you live in the town?” she asks.

He shakes his head. He doesn't live in the town. He points to the forest.

Eric walks over. He is curious too. “Does he want a coffee, Maya?” Eric whispers.

Maya asks the man, “Do you want a hot drink?”

The man thinks for a moment. Then, he speaks for the first time. His voice is very low. “No, thank you. I don't want coffee.”

He looks at the silver key again. “Do you have the box?” he asks Maya.

Maya is surprised. “No, I don't have a box. I only have this key.”

The man looks sad. He doesn't take the key. He turns around and walks toward the door. He doesn't look back. Maya and Eric watch him leave.

“He doesn't want the key,” Eric says. “But he wants the box. Where is it?”
