Chapter 18
The sound of the snapping branch echoed through the trees like a warning. Maya froze, the letter still in her hand. Her breath caught in her throat. For a moment, she couldn’t move at all.
Someone is out there.
She stepped backward slowly, careful not to make noise. The fog outside the cabin window was thicker now, swirling like pale smoke. She couldn’t see anyone, but she felt watched—closely, deliberately.
Another sound followed. Not a branch this time.
Footsteps.
They were slow, heavy, and getting closer.
Maya’s heart hammered. She slipped the letter and the map into her jacket pocket and scanned the room for another exit. The front door was too close to the footsteps. The back door was half‑blocked by a fallen beam. The only other option was the small window near the bed.
She moved toward it, trying to stay quiet, but the floorboards creaked under her weight. The footsteps outside stopped immediately.
Silence.
Then the footsteps started again—faster now.
Maya grabbed the edge of the window frame and pushed it open. Cold air rushed in. She climbed onto the narrow bed and pulled herself through, scraping her knee on the wood. She dropped to the ground outside, landing hard on her hands.
A shadow moved behind the cabin.
Maya ran.
The forest was darker now, the fog thicker than before. Branches whipped against her arms as she pushed through the undergrowth. She didn’t know which direction she was going—only that she had to get away.
Behind her, someone crashed through the trees.
They were running too.
Maya’s breath came in sharp bursts. Her legs burned. The forest floor was uneven, and twice she stumbled, catching herself just before she fell. She could hear the person gaining on her—their footsteps were louder, heavier, closer.
She darted between two trees and nearly slipped on wet leaves. A hand grabbed her jacket from behind.
Maya screamed and twisted away. The fabric tore, and she fell forward onto the ground. Before she could get up, the person lunged toward her. She felt fingers brush her ankle.
“No!” she shouted, kicking free.
She scrambled to her feet and ran again, her lungs aching. The fog thinned slightly ahead, and she saw a faint glow—moonlight reflecting off the lake. She pushed toward it with everything she had left.
Suddenly, voices echoed in the distance.
“Did you hear that?”
“Over there!”
Two joggers appeared on the trail, their flashlights cutting through the fog. Maya burst out of the trees, gasping.
“Help!” she cried. “Someone—someone is chasing me!”
The joggers turned their lights toward the forest just as a dark figure retreated into the shadows. The person stopped, watching them for a moment, then disappeared into the fog without a sound.
One jogger put a hand on Maya’s shoulder. “Are you hurt?”
Maya shook her head, though her whole body trembled. “I—I’m okay. I think.”
The other jogger scanned the trees. “Whoever that was… they’re gone now.”
Maya looked back at the forest, her heart still racing.
Someone had tried to stop her.
Someone who didn’t want her to know the truth.
And now they knew she had the letter.
They knew she had the map.
The danger was no longer hidden in the shadows.
It was following her.
