El Mapa Incompleto

Listen to the Story

The city was almost always silent. At night, only the wind between the empty buildings could be heard. Many streets were broken, and the city lights flickered as if they were afraid. Tomás walked quickly, with his hands in his pockets. He didn’t like being outside after sunset, but he needed to buy food.
In a small market, among old boxes and dust, he found a piece of paper. It was dirty and folded many times. When he opened it, he saw it was a map… but incomplete. In one corner there was a drawing of a sun and a sentence written in shaky handwriting:
“Sigue la luz antes de que desaparezca.” “Follow the light before it disappears.”
Tomás felt a shiver. What light? In the city there was almost no light. Even so, he kept the map. Something inside him told him he should follow it.
That night, he went out again. The air was cold and the city seemed darker than ever. Tomás followed the lines of the map. Some streets were blocked by abandoned cars. Some streets were blocked by abandoned cars.
At a crossroads, he heard a noise behind him. He stopped.
—¿Hola? —preguntó. “Hello?” he asked.
Nadie respondió. No one answered.
Tomás kept walking, but now his heart was beating faster. Every shadow seemed to move. Every window seemed to watch him. Even so, he did not stop.
After a while, he saw something strange: a lit streetlamp. It was the only strong light on the whole street. Under the streetlamp there was a metal door with the same symbol as on the map: a small sun.
Tomás tragó saliva. Tomás swallowed hard.
—Bueno… aquí estoy —susurró. “Well… here I am,” he whispered.
He knocked on the door. At first, nothing happened. Then he heard slow footsteps on the other side. The door opened with a long, metallic sound. A young woman appeared, holding a flashlight.
—¿Tienes el mapa? —preguntó con voz baja. “Do you have the map?” she asked in a low voice.
Tomás asintió. —Sí… pero no sé qué significa. Tomás nodded. “Yes… but I don’t know what it means.”
“It means you’re not afraid to look for something better,” she said. “Come in quickly. It’s not safe outside.”
Tomás went in. The door closed behind him with a loud bang. For a moment, his heart raced. But then he saw the inside: a large space, lit with handmade lamps. There were people working in silence, repairing radios, cleaning water filters, preparing boxes of food.
“We are a group of neighbors,” explained the woman, whose name was Lía. “We want to help the city. But we can’t do it alone.”
The people looked tired, but also determined. There was hope in their eyes, a hope he hadn’t seen in a long time.
—¿Puedo ayudar? —preguntó. “Can I help?” he asked.
Lía sonrió. —Claro. “Of course. If you made it here, you’re already part of the team.”
That night, Tomás helped fix flashlights and prepare food packages. Outside, the city was still dark and silent, but inside the shelter there was light, voices, and teamwork.
Before he left, Lía handed him a piece of paper. “It’s the part that was missing from the map,” she said. “Now you have the complete path.”
Tomás put the map in his jacket. When he went out into the street, the darkness didn’t scare him as much anymore. Now he knew he was not alone. There were people who wanted to change the city… and he was one of them.
