Welcome to the final lesson of Learn English 2. In this lesson you'll learn how to make adjectives from nouns and verbs using suffixes.

You'll also learn some common English words for items in the kitchen.

The lesson ends with a short story about three friends who visit Vancouver for three days in the winter.

Suffixes

Un suffixe est une lettre ou un groupe de lettres ajouté à la fin d'un mot.

Créer des adjectifs à partir des verbes

En anglais, le participe passé de nombreux verbes peut être utilisé comme un adjectif.

Exemples

Il existe plusieurs suffixes qui peuvent être ajoutés aux verbes pour les convertir en adjectifs.

Suffixe	Signification
ing	describes the effect of the verb
less	means without the action of the verb.
ive	describes the effect of the verb
ant	means to have the characteristic of the verb
ent	means someone who performs or causes the action of the verb
able ible	Cela signifie capables d'être. Beaucoup de ces mots ont été empruntés de français.

Creating adjectives from nouns

En anglais, il existe plusieurs suffixes qui peuvent être ajoutés aux noms pour les convertir en adjectifs. Les plus communs de ces suffixes sont:

Suffixe	Signification
y	Cela signifie caractérisés par ou enclins à
ish	means belonging to or having the characteristic of
ful	Cela signifie plein d'une qualité donnée.
less	means without
ous	Cela signifie plein d'une qualité donnée. La même chose que le suffixe eux en français.

Three friends—Ella, Ava, and Jack—arrived in Vancouver on a brisk winter’s morning for a three day vacation.	Trois amis, Ella, Ava et Jack, sont arrivés à Vancouver par une fraîche matinée d'hiver pour trois jours de vacances.
Day 1: The City Awaits	Jour 1 : La ville attend
Arriving early in the morning, the trio checked into a cozy Hotel in the heart of Downtown.	Arrivé tôt le matin, le trio s'est installé dans un hôtel confortable au cœur du centre-ville.
“First things first—coffee!” Ella exclaimed as they dropped their bags off at the hotel.	« Tout d’abord, le café ! » s’exclama Ella en déposant leurs bagages à l’hôtel.
They found a cute café close to the hotel, where they had a quick breakfast and coffee, which fueled them for their day.	Ils ont trouvé un café mignon près de l’hôtel, où ils ont eu un petit déjeuner rapide et du café, qui les a alimentés pour leur journée.
“I heard Granville Island is a must-visit. What do you think?” Jack suggested.	« J'ai entendu dire que l'île de Granville était un lieu à visiter absolument. Qu'en pensez-vous ? » suggère Jack.
“Absolutely, let’s go!” Ava agreed.	« Absolument, allons-y! » a accepté Ava.
They strolled through Granville Island, where the vibrant Public Market enticed them with its array of local produce and artisanal goods. The Granville Island Toy Company reignited their inner child with whimsical displays.	Ils se sont promenés dans l'île de Granville, où le vibrant marché public les a séduits avec son éventail de produits locaux et artisanaux. They dined at a restaurant near False Creek, their laughter mingling with the sounds of the people walking and cycling along the Seawall.	Ils ont dîné dans un restaurant près de False Creek, leur rire se mêlant aux sons des gens qui marchent et font du vélo le long de la Digue.
As the day drew to a close, they watched the sun set at English Bay.	À la fin de la journée, ils ont regardé le soleil se coucher à English Bay.

Day 2: Mountains and Sea	Jour 2 : Montagnes et mer
The next day was an ode to Vancouver’s majestic landscape. They took a short ferry to North Vancouver and then a bus ride to the base of Grouse Mountain. Wrapped in layers, they eagerly hopped on the Skyride, the city shrinking below them as the snow-covered peaks came into view. On the slopes, they found a variety of winter activities to choose from. Day 3: Coastal Serenity	Jour 3 : Sérénité côtière
Their final day promised tranquility. They explored the lush greenery of Stanley Park, taking a leisurely bike ride around the Seawall.	Leur dernière journée était placée sous le signe de la tranquillité. Ils ont exploré la verdure luxuriante du parc Stanley, en se promenant tranquillement à vélo le long du Seawall.
“I can’t believe this park is right in the city,” Ava said, marveling at the surroundings.	« Je n’arrive pas à croire que ce parc se trouve en plein centre de la ville », a déclaré Ava, s’émerveillant des environs.
Jack, an avid photographer, captured every breathtaking view—from the tranquil waters of Lost Lagoon to the haunting beauty of Siwash Rock. “And to think, we have so many more adventures ahead of us,” Ava added with a smile.	« Et pour y penser, nous avons encore tant d’aventures devant nous », a ajouté Ava avec un sourire.
And so, with hearts full and spirits lifted, Ella, Ava, and Jack said goodbye to Vancouver, promising to return one day.	Alors, le cœur plein et l’esprit enflé, Ella, Ava et Jack ont dit au revoir à Vancouver, promettant de revenir un jour.
