Using the present tense to talk about the future
In German the present tense is often used to talk about what is going to happen in the future when the time the event will happen is included in the sentence. For example:
- Ich gehe heute - I'm going today, or I'll go today.
- Ich gehe morgen - I'm going tomorrow, or I'll go tomorrow.
- Ich gehe nächste Woche - I'll go next week
The present tense can also be used to indicate something will happen soon. for example:
- Ich denke darüber nach. - I'll think about it.
- Ich helfe dir beim Aufräumen. - I'll help you clean up.
The helper verb werden can also be used to indicate an action will happen in the future. The next section discusses when to use this form to talk about the future.
